‘Anae Pono (Abundance of Mullet)
After 20 years of debate, Honolulu Rail Transit (HART) has built a mostly elevated rail system to go from Waikiki Beach to the Airport, and beyond, with more than 20 stations. I created a work for the station at the stop for Leeward Community College, near Pearl Harbor. In ancient times, fish ponds—unmatched marvels of early engineering—were built there. By legend, a chant was offered there to bless the ponds:
“May the fish in the fish ponds at Waiawa be as the stars in the sky above.”
I have created a star-studded star of mullets. The fish have been sculpted by award-winning fish artist Mike Kirkhart, who I worked with in the past to create both F.I.S.H. on San Antonio’s Riverwalk, and Got Any Jacks? at Miami International Airport.
