THE LORELEI CLUB
Central Library, Minneapolis. Donald Lipski had students at the MacPhail Center for Music engrave their names into the surface of twelve real violins, which he then arranged in a circle above the fireplace on the Art & Music floor of the Cesar Pelli designed building. The piece harkens back to the guitar Lipski had as a teen, which he and his friends etched. The obscure title of the piece, Lorelei Club, refers to a women’s choral group started in 1892 at Plymouth Church, a congregation with deep roots in traditional music. When Lipski bought the violins for the piece, he bought an extra and has since been teaching himself to play.
